Word for Word: Ultramarine
I’m in a writers’ group that meets on Zoom, though before the pandemic we met in person. Every week, we do a writing prompt: someone gives a page number, and our organizer picks a word from a huge dictionary. We write for five minutes. In this example, the word is: Ultramarine.
Standing on the edge of the pier, I gazed into the swishing ultramarine water glistening in sunlight. As I watched, a head surfaced. The creature resembled a seal but had human-like eyes. I gasped in wonder and took a step back.
I heard splashing before I saw the creature land, soaking wet, upon the pier. Splattered, I backed away hastily, giving the creature space. I closed my eyes long enough to wipe the salty water out of my eyes and brush wet hair out of my face.
When I opened my eyes again, the creature was… a mermaid. “Well, this is interesting. I’ve seen a plethora of mermaids, but not at this pier.”
