Word for Word: Skit
I’m in a writers’ group that meets on Zoom, though before the pandemic we met in person. Every week, we do a writing prompt: someone gives a page number, and our organizer picks a word from a huge dictionary. We write for five minutes. In this example, the word is: skit.
I was talking with friends when we shifted the conversation to the topic of the Burning Times — an era, lasting centuries, in which thousands of Europeans, 80% women, were accused of witchcraft and executed for it (burned at the stake, hanged, or drowned). Someone mentioned the Spanish Inquisition — that it was a part of the burning times. This reminded me of a Monty Python skit, so I said, “I didn’t expect the Spanish Inquisition!”
