Word for Word: Selfish

I’m in a writers’ group that meets on Zoom, though before the pandemic we met in person. Every week, we do a writing prompt: someone gives a page number, and our organizer picks a word from a huge dictionary. We write for five minutes. In this example, the word is: selfish.

This cat believes it’s selfish of humans not to share their coffee.

The birds singing in my back yard sounded lovely — until I noticed a selfish starling was eating all the birdseed and shoving away the swallows fluttering up to the bird feeder.

The dragon Flagstone’s hoard of gold was far greater than that of his neighboring dragons. Because he was selfish about his gold, he didn’t want any of his friends to notice the immensity of his collection and therefore invited them inside his cave for tea. Unlike all the other dragons, he kept a gold gate at his cave entrance and padlocked it before leaving home or going to bed.

Spells and Enchantments is the first volume in my middle grade fantasy series Rowanwick Witches, which includes a dragon named Brimstone and is available here:
