Word for Word: Foresight

I’m in a writers’ group that meets on Zoom. Every week, we do a writing prompt: someone gives a page number, and our organizer picks a word from a huge dictionary. We write for five minutes. In this example, the word is: Foresight.

Tarot cards (The Modern Witches Tarot), crystal ball, and a black cat’s paw

The witch sat at a round table upon which sat a crystal ball, while she shuffled a deck of tarot cards. She glanced up at the two individuals entering the shop. One of those individuals peered at her and waited for the witch to speak, but she didn’t. She continued shuffling her cards.

The shopkeeper, stocking a shelf with grimoires, was the first to speak. “Welcome! Welcome! Are you looking for something in particular?”

One shopper shrugged, but the other turned back to the witch, who quietly waited for the customer to join her at her table. She had foresight that this individual would visit the shop and ask to have her cards read… and she was correct.

This month I’ve been neglecting Medium because I’m participating in National Novel Writing Month.

Where I’ve been published this year:

  • My poem “Bonsai Tree” in the webzine Grim & Gilded, September 2022 issue.
