Witchy & Gothic Miniature Projects

After purchasing a used Victorian-style dollhouse and redecorating it, I feel like making other miniature rooms using display boxes, each containing two rooms.

This witch’s cottage is a work in progress. The wallpaper imitates plaster or mud walls with bricks showing through.

While collecting witchy miniatures, I collected some whimsical and some gothic. So I’ve decided to use them in two display boxes: whimsical witchy miniatures can go in the witch’s cottage, and gothic/sinister miniatures can go in a box displaying two rooms of a vampire mansion.

For these projects, I’m using a product newly available at Miniatures.com: they’re display boxes that include two rooms instead of only one. They have optional doors and windows that can be punched out… or covered with wallpaper.

The spooky furniture shown here in the witch’s-cottage-in-progress will go in the vampire rooms once I build them.

Here’s a close-up of the witch’s cottage wallpaper.

For moulding, I’ll use simple strips of wood (in contrast with the more elaborate baseboards, crown moulding, and wainscots I used in the Victorian-style dollhouse). I have larger strips of wood to use for ceiling beams.

Dark walnut is a lovely color for wood stain, but I recommend wearing rubber gloves if you don’t want to impersonate Lady MacBeth. I got messy and struggled to get all the stain off my hands, even with grainy heavy-duty cleaner.

Here are strips of wood freshly stained dark walnut — to be used for window frames, doorframes, and moulding such as baseboards.
