My dad and I drove from Portland, Oregon to Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, and to Seattle, Washington, in May 2012.

The Seatle Space Needle & a glass sculpture by Dale Chihuly

That last entry — in Victoria, Canada — was the end of my travel journal about British Columbia and Seattle. It’s strange I found time (or took the time) for journal writing in Canada but not in Seattle. I can write a bit based on memory….

My dad and I stayed at the Queen Anne Inn in Seattle for at least one night. I think it was two nights. I remember there were two beds, and mine occupied a quaint alcove. The inn is from the early twentieth century and was originally an apartment building, so it reminded me of my St. Louis apartments and the undergraduate dorm. It had a little kitchen, with a full-size refrigerator in which to store beverages. The inn was a few steps from a lovely Thai restaurant and across the street from a grocery store.

We did touristy things, like ride to the top of the Space Needle and gaze upon the city from up there — taking our time. Close to the Space Needle was a permanent exhibit of glass art by Dale Chihuly, whose art I first saw years ago at the St. Louis Art Museum. We wandered Seattle Center, the park that includes the Space Needle. My dad was amused by the fountain that strangely played music.
