The Thirtieth Anniversary of “Little Earthquakes”
It’s the 30th anniversary of Tori Amos’s album Little Earthquakes.
That means my CD is 30 years old. I listened to it today, and while the CD case was dusty and slightly cracked, the CD still plays. The first time I heard it, I was an undergraduate and was mesmerized — asked who the singer-songwriter was and purchased the CD. Instant fan. Back then I still mostly listened to classical music and show tunes.
Fun fact:
The lines “me and Neil’ll be/ hanging out with the Dream King” are a reference to Neil Gaiman and The Sandman. Before I read The Sandman graphic novels, I thought it was a reference to King Ludwig II of Bavaria, since he has also been called the Dream King (and I toured one of his castles when I was 17).
