I've never laughed along with that manipulative verbal abuse, no matter how uncomfortable my anger makes empathy-challenged witnesses, including the perpetrator. Even before reading this essay, I've instinctively known that when perpetual playground bullies (usually misogynists) pull the "Just kidding!" or, "That was just a joke!" bs, they're being manipulative.
