St. Louis really had affordable housing in the 1990s--I lived in apartments that were between $225 and $285 a month. Some of the museums have free admission, too, and if you lived in the city, you could go to the Missouri Botanical Gardens for free on Wednesday mornings.

Of course, I also juggled part time jobs and made $4.25 an hour to about $7 an hour.
