Craigdarroch Castle

My dad and I drove from Portland, Oregon to Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, and to Seattle, Washington, in May 2012.

Today we had breakfast at the hotel restaurant in the basement — it has kind of an art deco look with many mirrors-mosaics. And yet… it also looked like it was last redecorated in the 1980s. There’s also a big rack of jellies just like the previous hotel restaurant. It must be a Canadian thing, eh?

Inside Craigdarroch Castle

We took the bus to Craigdarroch Castle, a breathtaking stone Romanesque mansion built for a railroad baron (Dunsmuir) and his family in the eighteen-eighties. We wandered all over. We even climbed up the lookout tower with its views of the city and harbor. The mansion put me in the mood for Victorian embroidery, costuming, and a dollhouse based on the castle. We creatives rarely take a break from creativity.

What a staircase!
