Hermit Weekend

No matter what’s happening this weekend, I do NOT want to be around humans. I know, it’s August, not winter. So many festivals this time of year. But….

My mixed media piece, “The Future is Intersectional” (2020).

After my acupuncture appointment, I went across the street to Market of Choice. I was surprised to see a row of empty parking places… but I saw one spot closer to the front, so I squeezed my behemoth into it.

I should have parked between two empty spaces, after all. It soon became clear that people who have depth perception avoided this parking space for a reason. An identical behemoth on my left was parked over the line. (This is Oregon, so Subaru Outbacks.) A smaller car was on my right.

Some dude appeared right behind my behemoth. (If said behemoth were a person, he’d be intruding on their space.) It soon became obvious he owned the smaller vehicle. I was digging through my bag to lighten it before climbing out.

Because he was a white cis dude, he was too entitled to be polite and say, “Excuse me, I can’t get into my car,” let alone, “Happy Women’s Equality Day! Sorry nobody but cishet white male Christians will ever be respected in this country!” (Women’s Equality Day is aspirational, not meant to be ironic.)

Instead, he barked, “I CAN’T GET INTO MY CAR!”

I jumped, said, “Oh, shit,” looked at the small car, and put the key into the…
