During spring break 1988, I went with other students and parents and my German teacher to four German-speaking countries: Austria, West Germany, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein. The following is part of a series of travel journal excerpts. Keep in mind: a teenager wrote this.

Part of Schloss Linderhof’s facade

This morning we left beloved Munich — and I scurried across the street, to the bus, in fear for my life. We did some extensive travel.

Here’s a summer palace for Bavarian rulers. Not sure, but I may have taken this photo from a bus window.

We stopped at a restaurant for our “second breakfast” or zeite Fruehstuck. After ich detranke mein apfelsaft, I eagerly sauntered off to the gift shop, where I purchased a Deutsche plastic doll in traditional clothing, two postcards, and a teddy bear wearing green Austrian garb. The latter was fuer meiner schwester [for my (much younger) sister], despite the lack of time.

This restaurant was below two mountaintop castles: Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. Neuschwanstein Schloss is the most famous castle Mad King Ludwig built, and Hohenschwangau Schloss is the home where he grew up.
